Avoid at all costs, Sirens call you to death. Reread the Oddessy.

Its a shame that you never mention what the conversation between you two were about. But you may well have talked to a mermaid and not a siren for if a siren would have taken your life. Also if a mermaid talked with you she must have given you some sorta of a warning for they are very protective mystical creatures. I really would like for you to drop me a line at mark4460@mypacks.net And tell me about the conversation you two had..............

Wow what a question.
Its possible. Most of the people who saw mermaids in history are now thought to have seen manitees.
However, there are many stories of mermaids tempting sailors with their beauty and leading them off course or even under the water to drown. That is why they are called Sirens. If thats what you really saw you don't want to see it again. Its a sign of impending death by water. Be careful.

Return to the shore late in the evening. Wait silently and the siren will return as long as it doesn't feel threatened. Did she wade out of the water or did she float right above the water line? If she floated above the water line, then sometimes singing will bring her back. They usually return to the same place or close by when ever they come to shore. Try returning to the water and see if she will come back. Good Luck. Sometimes it takes a while for them to feel safe enough to return so just be patient.

I think you got a problem with species recognition there.
A Mermaid would return to the water, a Siren yould take to the wing and fly away, since she is half bird.
Finding mermaids is easy, especially if they like you: Go where you saw her last, and follow her when she shows up again...
Sirens, however, are a different proposition altogether, they are very flighty!

She's at the club waiting for you to buy her a drink.
Take her home, and she will dash your soul against the
craggy rocks of the shore for that is what Sirens do!

Interesting...
Go back and wait for her, she should come back to the spot you were last.
Good luck.

You should have followed her, that was why she was singing to you...you may have insulted her by not following! Good luck!
