Are you on the mains sewer or a septic tank?
If you are on a septic tank, this is a common problem, that can be caused by more than one thing, the most likely is the distribution box and drain field pipes are clogged.

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and you can get some 'emergency' bacteria compound which usually unblocks within 24 hours.

This may also happen if you have had a lot of rain and the area where your drain field is is waterlogged.

If you are on a mains sewer, then the most likely is a temporay clog, that the water finally dispensed with

Well, it must have been clogged for it to overflow, but it may have been a wad of toilet paper that eventually got soggy enough to pass. I wouldn't call a plumber unless you experienced more trouble.

Sometimes log jambs get held up in the trap of the toilet, and it would appear as though the toilet aint plugged. Many times the log jambs will free themselves. Plunge the crapper a few times and use as usual. If it backs up again and the plunger wont free it, you may have a main sewer blockage and need to call roto rooter or the like.

There could be something sticking. Call a plumber for safety.
