I don't know where you live, but i live in southwestern OH and Hobby Lobby has a section on coin collecting. There are two small, hardback books in this section of the store. One is blue and one is red. I believe they are 16.95/book, but the pictures are great, and the prices are accurate.

I will go along with medoraman, The Krause/Mishler books are called the Standard Catalogs of World Coins and they do a good job but they are not perfect. To cover 1600-2006 you need 5 books that adds up to well over $200.00. The images are okay but not great. There is a big difference between just Spain in Europe and it's colonial empire in the Americas. For suggestions you can write Sanford Durst 106 Woodcleft Ave.,Freeport N.Y. 11520. Ask him for help on which book to get. He is probably the largest dealer in coin books, at least in the USA maybe the world. He has a lot of out of print books.

Well, if you are sure the coins are Spanish and not Central or South American, then the standard reference is Cayon and Cayon "Las Monedas Espanolas". Check on Ebay as the seller Numislit sells it every once in a while. It is in Spanish, but is the definitive guide from Ancient times to modern Euro Issues. If you get it for less than $80 you are getting a bargain. It is actually two large hardcover books.

If you are not sure if it is colonial or not, then Krause made a book on Spanish, Portugese, and colonial coins that would be helpful. Sometimes they are remaindered on Ebay inexpensively.
