Five:
GMT-5 Eastern Standard Time Zone
GMT-6 Central Standard Time Zone
GMT-7 Rocky Mountain Standard Time Zone
GMT-8 Pacific Standard Time Zone
GMT-9 Hawaiian-Aleutian Time Zone
Alaska is mostly in HAT, and partly in PST.
This is without all that mucking about with Daylight Savings. Just Universal Time Codes.

lets see now! eastern, central, mountian and pacific coast, now you have alaska and worst yet hawaii. do we count the ocean inbetween San Fran. and Hawaii? in the orig. 48 states its 4, but with the others it could be as high as 9. Take your pick, i guess.
p.s. i forgot, you can't count the ocean as it is international waters.
