I just got a new laptop computer that has a wireless adapter but im not sure if i can hook up my router to the dial-up connection that I have at home. I need help and I wanted to know if there is a router out there that would hook up to a dial-up connection and still give me good access to the internet.

While there are some routers that will have an on-board modem, the function is usually used for backup as opposed to primary Internet connection. As the cost of these routers is significantly higher than a consumer grade wireless router, you would be better served to use the extra money for acquiring a broadband connection.

You can not hook a router to a dial up connection. It only works on high speed connections like cable or dsl. The signal on a dialup is not fast enought for a router to be able to work with it.

Before I was able to get DSL where I live, I used ICS (internet connection sharing) on my desktop, along with an access point connected to my desktop ethernet port. With ICS, your XP PC acts as a router and a DHCP server for other computers on the net that are set up to use the PC as their gateway. It was slow, and it pretty much keeps your phone line busy all the time, but it does work, and multiple computers can be on line at the same time. don't try streaming content though. And you will notice a slowdown if more than one device is trying to load content at the same moment, but other than that, not much of a slowdown.
just click "start" "help" and search for ICS or internet connection sharing" for step-by-steps

If you're just using the one laptop on it, and the hardware supports it (has the right plug) I don't see why you can't! That being said, I haven't seen a router with a phone jack on it. The experts all say that you need broadband/DSL but if you're not going to have multiple machines running off the one dialup connection, who cares?

Connect the laptop to the desktop using Ad Hoc (rather than infrastructure) mode on your wireless cards (you will need one for the desktop, too), then use internet connection sharing. Broadband WOULD be better, but it isn't always an option.

You do not want to use a wireless connection with a dial up....I am not even sure its possible. Get High Speed (cable) and you will be all set.

Do you have a under pressure modem from an cyber web connection, or do you have dial-up? the two are completely diverse. you are able to no longer do what you prefer with a dial-up connection. Dial-up modems have the incorrect hardware to connect with a on the spot setup. If it particularly is a cable cyber web connection (or a DSL connection coming in via telephone line), you ought to function a on the spot get right of entry to element - the least perplexing thank you to get one is to get a on the spot router, it particularly is a on the spot get right of entry to element and a few different issues - yet they value the comparable with the aid of fact the equivalent on the spot get right of entry to element. (Wal-Mart - WRT54GS - $40 9.88) it particularly is with reference to the terrific on the spot router you will get interior the cost selection ("greater desirable" ones are purely speedier - yet your cyber web speed won't get any speedier via making use of one). in case you are able to study at a 4th grade point, you are able to save on with the guidelines on the vast sheet featuring it. in case you have any issues, purely placed up yet another question. many people have the comparable router (mine's a pair of foot from my left hand) so we are able to talk you thru something.
