I've been using a glo white sachet in the wash but very disappointed. Any other products that won't damage the clothes and that are safe for low temp washing in a machine. it's all gone a bit grey or patchy on my clothes.

All of these are good ideas, so have a go. But the main problem I think is to keep whites nice and white in the first place. A guy I know had lots of greying white towels and told me this was his problem. Turned out he was putting all his clothes in the same wash.
If by any chance you're doing this too - wash all whites together!
I have to say I haven't had the 'greying' problem; I use the cheapest washing powder from Lidl and it's excellent. So you don't need to spend a fortune on special stuff.

Use Vanish in hot water once in a while, carry on low temp washes at other times

Washing soda in with your powder helps the powder to wet the fabric easier and get into the dirt better.
Vanish is good on stains though

What i do with my whites is soak them in a bucket with some soap powder and a little bit of Jik. It works.

try soaking in vinegar before you wash, seems to be good for alot of things.
