Otherwise if you're going for a sad angle, there's Saltwater Wells in My Eyes by Julian Lennon. Very effective song - also about humanity in general, as is the song Imagine by John Lennon.

As the person above said, Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell. The Counting Crows did a version a few years ago.
If you can get a hold of it, theres a song called Light Of Day by a band named Goanna. They're an aussie band, but they're songs are pretty hard to come by. It's about environmental destruction.

There used to be that show with Captain Planet (that might be the name of it) maybe you can find that song... blast from the past... not sure if this is a more serious project or not but if its not and you wanted something fun this might work...
