I need to re-do my roof but not now I cannot fix the ceiling where they pass through. Someone recommeded soaking sponges with ammonia and throwing them above the ceiling! This did not work for they returned the next day, but it did let me know that there was a bat in my roof as well

Put something sticky where they hang out, like double-sided tape. The birds don't like getting stuck and will quit hanging out there.

place a fake owl on your roof. owls are the natural predator of pigeons and they will avoid it
