You sound like you are after a beginner's guiitar, do the following:

1)Take a guitar lesson (anywhere between £15-£25 an hour usually, depending on where you live) and look on the net to find how to play the major choards, but in particular a G major, F major, any major barre chord, and a B minor.
2) Have another few lessons and learn the pentatonic blues scale 1st position (sound difficult, but it isn't and your instructor should make it clear) + play the chords again.
3) Go into a guitar shop and try playing what you've learnt on - A Stratocastor, a Les Paul, an SG, an Ibenez and then any other you like the look of or they recommend.
4) Spend a good chunck of time playing each until you find one that feels comfortable.

You should have a good idea of whick one to buy now, the other major consideration is the sound you're after though. Basically Humbuckers = Rock/Metal, Single Coil pickups = better for softer, cleaner sounds.

Discuss this with them at the shop and mail me or ask on here again if in any doubt.

People band names about like Fender and Gibson, and to some degree they are right, but I'd never buy a guitar I'd not played. I owned a modified Gibson Studio worth £700 but traded it in for an Epiphone Les Paul standard that I now gig with and to me it is better.

Remember, Slash's main guitar is a hand built one by a now dead guitar maker, he bought around 50 odd £1000+ guitars and still never found one he liked as much.

Always buy a gutiar from a store, never online like ebay. That way you can look around and try out the different guitars. Find one that feels right to you, try out how it sounds etc.

Music shops usually sell starter packs for electric gutiars whcih usually cost around £150.00. They normally include the guitar, a small amp, a shoulder strap, various leads and usually simple instructions regarding tuning etc, everything you need to get started. There are a vairiety of different brands that make these kits, Squire Fender etc, you just have to look around. The guitars in these kits aren by no means brilliant but they are good for if you are just starting out. Once you get better you can always upgrade your guitar.

An electric gutiar uses electronic pick ups to amplify the sound created when the strings vibrate which gives it a stronger sound. This is different to an acoustic (normal as you call them) gutiar as they rely on their hollow body to amplify the vibrations of the strings and give them their sound. this is why an acoustic guitars have hollow bodies and electric guitars don't (They are some electric guitars that are hollow and there are some electro-acoustic guitars around aswell but i'm trying to keep things simple!)

The cost of guitar lessons vary, to find out that you would have to ring tutors and find out how much they charge.

Hope this helps.

It really does depend on personal taste and if you're new to playing, it's something that you will decide on over time. Fender or Gibson are the 'old' firm and still big favourites with players today, but PRS (Paul Reed Smith) have an excellent range and are currently doing a slightly cheaper SE guitar. I can't give you a specific website unfortunately as there are so many but there are 3 names there that you could check out on the web. The cost of lessons will vary on area but I would guess around £15.00 / £20.00

I like Ibanez and BC Rich. Price can vary.
Check ebay for deals, they have music stores. Also go down to a local guitar store and try some out.
Private guitar lessons will be about £15 an hour.

IMHO, there is no single "best" -- just an echelon of great ones. Here's one that came to mind:

http://alembic.com/

When you write "normal" guitar v. electric I assume you mean acoustic. The fundamental differences are that with an acoustic the tone is determined by variables such as size, shape, type of wood, bracing, etc. whereas with electric the type, location and configuration of the pickups as well as whether it's got a fixed vs. floating (tremolo) bridge are the primary factors which define tis unique sound.

As far as cost of lessons, that depends on your locale and demand for the instructor.

Best wishes.

For a cheap, yet still good quality electric, you are looking at around $200-300 US. and a small amp (portable) $100. But if you shop wisely, you could probably pick it up cheaper.
