The batting replacement isn't a worry. The slip-catching is.

I think that Cook is a fantastic batsman, but also is Trescothick when he has his head on, i do personally feel that it will be a major loss to the England team.
I am hoping that Vaughan can now quicken up his progress in recovering from injury.
My England team would be
Andrew Strauss
Alister Cook
Kevin Piterson
Freddie Flintoff
Paul Collingwood
Matthew Hoggard
Steve Harminson
Geraint Jones
Monty Paneasar
Ian Bell
Mahmood

Since Trescothick is going through stress related illness, he has not been able to concentrate in his batting. Otherwise he was a very good player for England. Considering the present state of affairs, Cook is defenitely a better choice. However, chances of England retaining the Ashes are very remote.

I think we would all agree that Treco in his current state is no use to England on the tour and in reality should never have been picked.
However, to lose our most experienced opener, on the most challenging of tours is without doubt a major loss. Whilst his technique is not the greatest, Aussie wickets and conditions are set up for free flowing, quick scoring, particularly early on against the new ball when the most attacking fields will be set.
In regards to Cook - I am glad that this means he will now definitely be playing. To me there should have been no doubts at all about this......there is no way Bell or Collingwood match up to him. In fact these two players I think show up a major problem in the England batting line up, as to me neither of them are anything like World Class. You go through the Aussie batting line up and they all are........
If we can avoid defeat in the first test then you never know.......but it is going to be tough.

No way! Trescothik is a better batsman than Cook. Cook is a new player and Aussies would be ready for him and would test his skills straightaway. Loss of Tres is a shock to the England team. Tres is a very good player of fast bowling.

The best thing about it is that it means Collingwood will definitely play. He's the best player of spin in the team, but he'd have missed out behind Bell (why is he there? the aussies don't rate him) and Cook (who will be very good, but isn't better than Collingwood yet) if Trescothick hadn't had a tizz.

IF Tresco was on form, then I think we needed his experience, despite the obvious class and composure of Cook. But as he's not, then he shouldn't be picked. It is a shame, though, that he's not just off form, but unwell - form, as they say, is temporary, and it would have been nice to hope he could play himself into some form in the warm-ups, or in games with the Academy.
That said, Cook will do well, and Colly gets to play - he's such a fighter, and with the tail as long as it appears likely to be, we need some grit and old-fashioned test playing application somewhere in there.
God I sounded just like Boycott then, how frightening!

Alistair cook is a class act, im glad tresco realised now that he isn't fit because it would have been worse half way through the series. I like our batting line up without him.
Strauss
Bell
Cook
Pieterson
Flintoff
Jones (hmmm)
Still the first five are awesome, come on England
