F1 gearboxes are semi-automatic 7+1 speed gearboxes controlled by paddle shifters. That's 7-speed for forward motion and a reverse gear. But its use is restricted by the rules to certain situations and to certain parts of the track.
A car is disqualified if it moves in the pits in reverse gear.

But its use is prohibited by the rules to certain situations and to certain parts of the track and if done -disqualified and no points go back home with mama!

I think Michael tried to put his gear in reverse after he infamously "parked" his car at Rascasse in Monaco. Then his engine stalled. Did he really? I don't know. Was it really a driver error? Yes, says the man himself.

Yes they do... one time Fisichella or someone else went tooo far forward on their start position and then went back...i didn't know they had a reverse gear until i saw it ...

They have to have one, it's in the rules. In the old days teams used to just put one in but never thought to check if it worked or not...I remember Niki Lauda saying how he was surprised once when he tried to get reverse after a spin and it worked...

YA .. I SAW KIMI RAIKKONON REVERSE TO GO BACK 2 D STARTIN POSITION IN INDIAPOLIS 2004..ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT USED MUCH IT IS COMPULSORY 2 HAVE A REVERSE GEAR...

yes, but its hardly ever used - i think i have seen one instance of it being used after car skidded in a really wet race once

NO, it dosen't have.................but i've F1 car which has a two reverse gears.......
