WPP stands for "Wire & Plastic Products". It is what the company used to do before Martin Sorrell bought it and turned it into an advertising agency.

Instead of spending a few million to have consulants come up with a new name Sorrell just changed the name to "WPP". Smart man.

The history of the WPP runs something a little like this.
Martin Sorrell, in 1985, wanted to build a worldwide marketing services company through a public entity, so bought a stake in a UK manafacturer of wire baskets "Wire and Plastic Products Plc".

In 1986-87, Sorrell becomes cheif executive of the renamed WPP Group, and begins aquiring resource and companies which enable him to build above and below the line capabilities.
