Mathematics is funny sometimes but not funny always , Its quite serious for your studies :
Funny part :
double 1 (11) multiplied by 2 = double 2 (22) (11 *2=22)
Serous part :
a+(b+d)= a-c+d
Find a,b,c and d ?
Is this funny ?
Ok but your question is quite good .
Nice question .

This is a case of language problem.
There is a book in the library that say Fun with mathamatic.
My IT-30 Calculator(Rev2, !978-79) had good size book with it that also had some tricks in it and some fun items in them.
This is a case of language bearier, the person would like to know different oddities of math.
There are lots of them and they are fun to play with and it throws more light on the subject in more ways and hooks the people on math. It is more fun then Calculus and..........

Mathematics is an exact, absolute science. Its official short form is "Math", I believe Maths is a typographical error.
All other answers are good but for one. If we were to combine all of them and try to come up with single definition, we will not be able to cover it all and do proper deserved justice. We will always leave out some thing.
What is it?
It encompasses various disciplines.
To name a few for the start:
Arithmetic.
Geometry.
Trigonometry.
Algebra.
..........
....
..
It compliments other scientific and liberal arts disciplines. Such as Philosophy and Psychology to Physics and Chemistry....
Without its use in many other disciplines, the advances achieved in those discipline would have been far less and few.
It is used in all aspects of our life, from cradle to grave. Even a child knows the difference between just one candy and wants the other.
You may say world revolves around its use and its use encompasses the universe.
I am not that good at it. I have lots to learn even with Advance engineering, math and physisc degree, but I am hooked on math and math has deep hooks in all of us.

Mathematics is the only absolute science till date. People who try making fun out of maths by proving things like 1 = 100 are simply ignorant of the correct usage of maths and ask questions like you have asked.
People who suppose maths is funny should either not join community like this one or should take psychiatrist help.
I am not commenting anything personal, just expressing views about the question & not getting personal.

You can be funny, but not mathematics. Mathematics is such a subject which is interesting at all times. You will have mathematics every minute in your life(when counting currencies or when watching your watch or driving your car at a specified speed), so please don't feel funny about "MATHEMATICS"

Here is a proof of 0 = 1:
x = 1
=> x = x*x
=> x-1 = x*x - 1
=> x-1 = (x+1)(x-1)
=> 1 = x+1
=> 0 = x
=> 0 = 1
