I live on the very northern part of Honshu. So far nothing has happened. They were predicting the first of the waves to hit about 30 minutes ago. And those they were predicting were only supposed to be 6.5 feet high. But so far nothing has been reported. They are simply reporting high tide.

Edited to add: Calm down people. So far there have been no reports of high waves and the ones that were to hit Hokkaido were expected quite awhile ago. We are under an advisory at the moment but so far there has been nothing. *knocks on wood* Even so, the waves they were expecting were no more than 6 feet!

I agree...get the hell out of there..

TOKYO (AP) - Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning after an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.1 hit the Kuril islands north of Japan.

The quake struck about 390 kilometres east of the Etorofu islands north of Japan at 6:15 ET, according to the agency.

A tsunami of about 2 metres or more could hit the Pacific coast of Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido and main island of Honshu after 7:10 ET, the agency said.

The agency told residents along Japan's Pacific coast to flee to higher ground.

Superbear....you're like farthest you can be from the Hokkaido area and still be in Japan, not counting Iwo Jima since it's not inhabited by civilians except the people who work on the base there.

As for the tsunami...6 feet can be pretty serious but the largest recorded waves were no larger than 16 inches this time.

It provides an threat for the moribund eastern financial equipment to have a rebound. whilst the 1995 earthquake in Japan killed 1000's, the financial equipment went up right here 12 months by way of reconstruction efforts.
