about the re-issue of the 1939 Dandy Comic Annual. Yes it may contain 'offensive' and 'racist' language, but this was not the case when it was first published! Do you not think that these people should grow up! Personally, I think the book is just 'dandy'!!!!

Dan - I'm not allowed to be racist....if I speak my mind - I get arrested. It is just that , maybe, I think the dandy could have something that is too near the truth!!

i think they do have a right to complain if it contains offencive language. what i don't agree with is sending people home for wearing crosses or getting rid of black jelly babies or my nephew having to sing "bar bar rainbow sheep" at nursery! PC gone mad!!

Yes, we all have the right to complain about anything, and anything you could call racist today was racist in 1939, unless the offensive and racist language has been added just for the re-issue. And I do agree with you that these people should grow up, if anything it is part of our social history and indicates how far our standards have raised since 1939. I would think that the people complaining are probably white and middle class and feel the need to stand up for the black community instead of letting them represent themselves on more important issues.

It's called freedom of speech. Regardless of whether it's racist or not. You have voiced your opinion saying black people shouldn't complain well conversely we can voice our opinion to object to it. It's our right as human beings. Just like the BNP can voice their opinions. I can't shut them up because it's their right to free speech. I don't like it but I choose to ignore it.
It's free speech for all. (That's just an example).

You have to understand society changes over time. What may have been acceptable then isn't now. And it doesn't stay at just race. Things such as gender, sexuality, religion, general lifestyle etc have all changed and moved on. People have (or should have) become more civilised since 1939. For crying out loud this IS the 21st Century.

On another note, personally I couldn't care less about a comic. I don't think one little book is going to make much difference and cause more or less racism. You'll find that we black people have better things to worry about then a comic.

People who get upset by what was published in 1939 should realise that, that was then and this is now. We are learning from things that happened and we are trying to correct some things. I get very angry when certain groups demand apologies for things that happened many years ago and they expect us in our generation to be accountable for it. We are not responsible for anything that happened before our time but I feel that with the introduction of human rights a lot of people are on the cash band waggon and will look at anything that shows that they have been discriminated against.

It's good you stated that it wasn't the case when it was first published. Since then alot of campaigns have taken place to curb racism. We live in a free society and every person has a right to exercise their rights if they feel offended. I bet you would react in the same way if you were offended in some way and ofcourse there are ways you could be offende dating back to history .
Let them exercise their rights while they can.
However personally am the kind who turns th other cheek too.

Saintee,
Racism is never going away. People will complain about being offended. It's just a fact of life, no matter how much you try you will always offend some one. All people are a little racist including black people. I think thats what bothers me most, black people are some of the most racist people in the world. They always complain about you and everyone else being racist, but they don't see the racism in there own minds.

Yes, of course they have the right to complain, the phrase "black people" only has one important word in it, that word is people.. in general PEOPLE have a right to complain, it doesnt matter what race they are, If something is obviously affended by any material, then they have a right to complain. Racism is what is wrong with the world today, it rules races, religeons and governments alike. It controls wars, greed and slavery. It needs to be dealt with...

To re issue the 1939 Dandy when the publishers knew the content is just plain silly!!!

That sort of language is not welcome in todays society and hasnt been for a long time, of course they have the right to complain. If u where offended by something then so would you!

So I ask u Whats the difference????

Theres no such thing as black people. We are all shades from light to dark brown.

There is no such thing as bullying and stigmatising and putting peole down, when we have the ability to bat and ball with each other equally. ie you cheeky to me, and i can come back and be cheeky to you. It gets out of hand and abusive when a person , or a group(a culture) havent got the ability to come back. and when the depraving abuse continues, this is very damaging and very gleeful to the abuser. Note in its extreme it is torture and many other horrendous things that we abhor in society. This dandy article can be considered to be likened to someone shitting in a hole, and years later digging the stink up. ie rubbing it back in a cultures faces. Mind you I still hark back to my previous statement that we are all one colour of different shades. So I dont go along with skin colour culture.

You are clearly a white person living in your cosy protected world free from dicrimination and prejudice. What right do YOU have to dare to be so offensive.Walk a mile in a black persons shoes before you judge a persons right to complain. You clearly have never felt the effects of racism...how lucky you are.I am not black by the way just incase you are assuming i must be.
