I have a '86 Ford Ranger with an automatic transmission.

I noticed once when he drove it, that after reversing out of a parking space, he put it into "drive" BEFORE it completely stopped. Now, I am not auto technician, but, something tells me that this couldn't be good on the transmission. It seems like that would just be common sense.

So, am I right? If so, just how many times does he have to do this before I am rendered vehicleless?

Do you know of a web site that will CLEARLY point this out?

By the way, the transmission was rebuilt in Oct. '05.

Thanks in advance,

Shannon

I'm not sure because I am no mechanic, but I know a lot of people who do that and it can't be good for the car. I wouldn't let him do it.

it depends on how fast he is going...if he is just pulling out of a parking space and pushing the brake to stop...(but doesnt stop all the way before shifting, it will be fine). there is more stress on the transmission when it shifts from 1st to 2nd under full throttle than from reverse to drive with it idleing. everything the transmission does "wears" it out to some degree.

Yes it will damage your transmission. Even a small amount of movement will, in time, create a problem. Before engaging any gear or neutral the vehicle should be stationary.
If it was my vehicle, I would indicate that his driving technique is not mechanically sympathetic. If the advice goes unheeded, remove the cause.
Cannot help with a website, sorry.

I'm sure it's not good for the transmission but it's especially bad for the universal joints in the drive shaft. Check the owner's manual for shifting instructions.

You are correct. It's not good for the transmission. However, It depends on how fast he's going in reverse. Just barely moving wont hurt it.

As long as it isn't rolling to fast shifting from R to D won't hurt a thing in an auto trans. While shifting into park while its moving is a bad thing.

If he accelerated as he shifted into forward it will not hurt it. The power will be transfer-ed to the back wheels. IF he was coasting and shifted into forward its not bad unless you could hear the gear make a "clang" sound. Hope this helps....

do not let the knuckle head drive your car. he will not care if it wrecks the transmission.
