Steffi Graf was only playing the French as a tune-up for Wimbledon (where she lost the singles final to Lindsay Davenport and broke John McEnroe's heart by playing mixed doubles with him, reaching the semifinals and then pulling out). Martina Hingis was a solid #1 and that match was something like her eighth final in ten majors. This match has been voted the best women's match by fans (experts prefer Seles over Graf in 1992).
When Hingis managed to beat down the Graf power game and go up a set and a break, it looked well in hand. But Graf, like Jack Nicklaus, had the knack for being able to hang around and not lose (best example 1993 Wimbledon when Jana Novotna served up 4-1 in the third and ended up crying all over the Duchess of Kent). Hingis got a couple of line calls she didn't like and proceeded to have a mental meltdown on court. Every other point she was quarreling with the umpire or even walking over to the other side of the net to dispute line calls. The French crowd came down hard on her, which seemed to have an effect on her as well. Soon the second set was over, and it was almost impossible to imagine that Hingis could right the ship. There was a surreal moment in the third set when Hingis broke to get back on serve, but Graf was well in command and ran out the rest of the match. Hingis' mother had a hard time convincing her to go out for the presentation afterwards.
