People are naturally protective of what they recognise as a safe environment for living, and they see anything that deviates from their perceived notion of the good as being a threat. The problem with this is that it is not conducive to social harmony and will ultimately culminate into violence. A primary cause of this 'stand- offishness' is that of the economic theory of capitalism, which is inherently dangerous, as it pools wealth into the hands of the few, and leaves the have-nots to fight amongst themselves for scraps. This leads to greed, selfishness, and the imperative to seek power over others through any means necessary.

I think, truthfully, that it's a matter of overkill. As an example, I worked at a busy airport for 31years in contact with public for a major airline...I just got peopled out...Since I left 2 years ago..people have become more important to me...for a while I just didn't want to see/hear anybody afterwork(--anyone who works with the public a lot will know what I mean)...I think extending that to your question maybe in part that people have no downtime at all now ...they're always working with the public or on their cells or text messaging or whatever..and never get anytime for themselves..It's called burnout.
Or does this even answer your question..rereading it I think we may be talking about parallel but slightly different issues.

you must be young and sweet..
I used to be once..
with age and experience.. you realise that we live in a highly competitive environment where fear and often intimidation play a increasing role.. mostly because the "economy" is not blazing great guns as we would be lead to believe and thus people are finding themselves more and more isolated whilst having to work harder, for less; and in many cases without ever experiencing half the stuff they get to watch on TV every night..
Worst of all is that the most important things in life.. health, youth.. a clean environment.. are being completely taken for granted.. and almost hijacked now with all the unhealthy foods and additives in foods.. including the recycled sewrage we will soon be drinking.. not to mention the depletion of fish stocks and forests.. Oh.. and wars we fight over control of oil...
and why??? for the "economy" naturally..
There's little community spirit.. little for a community to do anyway.. it's not like a community in Sydney can solve it's own homeless problems.. or drug addict problems.. all spare land has been sold to developers now.. all farms are privately owned and commercially driven.. so get used to eating apples that have been gassed for 3 months in cryo-secure storage facilities.. purchased through large multinational supermakret chains..
Does't it suck..
