If the operating system had been upgraded from and older version the upgrade might be the cause. I had been running WindowsNT on a machine we built about 8 years ago; when I finally broke down and "upgraded" the operating system I found that it would only shut down halfway. After it goes through the shutdown process there is a click and it sounds like it shut off, but there is still a fan running and I have a blank video signal. To completely turn it off I have to turn off the power switch on the power supply. The on/off switch on the front of the computer is disabled at this point. After I turn the power supply switch back to 'on' I can start the computer again normally, but it will not shut down completely, and I think it's because the upgrade left traces of the old system in place and it does not work with the shutdown programmed into he new operating system.

There's probably not much you can do about it except to buy a new computer, since I would guess this is caused by a shortfall in the thinking of the programmers who write this stuff..

If all else fails open the aspect of the case for sparkling air.
