can also be formed by the combination of Ammonium Nitrate and Sodium Hydroxide, where ammonia gas is liberated and also water is a final product. You're probably in graduate school by now, so yeah..,

No doubt it is sodium nitrate but it is not the common salt!!! common salt is sodium chloride (used in food). The sodium nitrate is also known as Chile Saltpeter (becuse it is abundant in the soil of Chile).
One more thing - "Saltpeter" is the name of KNO3
while "Chile Saltpeter" is NaNO3
