It doesn't matter when the employer finds out about the lie, you would probably be immediately disqualified from the application process, being seen as untrustworthy.
If you were luck enough to get the job and then they found out you had lied on your application form, you would, almost certainly, get sacked, siting breach of trust.
Tell the truth in the first place. Why do you need to lie about your age? If you think you will be discriminated against because you are either too young or too old, check out the new Age Discrimination legislation (well that's if you are here in the UK).
This link takes you to the ACAS, which has quite a good guide.

There's no reason to lie. Employers cannot discriminate on age as long as you are old enough to work legally in your state. If you feel you are "too old" you are mistaken. There are alot of benefits to hiring older Americans that some employers recognize. For example older workers have more reliability and stability than younger people so they are apt to stay in job longer, reducing the need to continuously train people. Employers cannot ask your age during the hiring process anyway. If you are younger and want to appear older, you will need a work permit anyway and that's going to show up immediately. If you have confidence in yourself and your abilities, your age is of no concern.

It will be found out immediately if you will be required to submit other papers such as the birth certificate or diplomas.. and it also depends if the employer is doing background checks, or remember the section in the bio-data where-in you have the preffered persons which they can inquire about you.? if you do lie, then you are taking the risk..if the employer will find out then it can possibly be a ground for disqualification. < i am only 16 years old and all that i have typed in here are from my learnings in my past classes, and some personal views.> hope this helps. :Þ

yes, u have to give them your social security number, your birthday automatically shows up.
i would never reccommend lying on a job application. what if u get the job and u excel at it and advance to a really high position. 10-20 years later someone comes and audits the company employee files and finds out u told a little lied. u can get fired and the company can do this. even if u r the best employee they have.

Don't you dare lie. This is one of the easiest for them to detect. If you have already lied then just withdraw the application, you really blew it.
