Use the proper cleaning and oiling kit or throw out the filter and buy a paper element. Why have a K&N filter and then not care for it in the proper manner ?
If you do decide to do the right thing, be easy on the oil when oiling the filter, it can contaminate the mass air flow sensor wire if over oiled (especially on Fords).

Don't be a cheapskate and buy the cleaning kit. They work properly and will assure the filter works at maximum efficiency. If you really can't splurge on the cleaning kit, I'd try a light mixture of dawn dish soap and water to clean, then reoil with a light weight oil like wd40.

The cleaning kit is only about $10-$15 and you can get 4-5 cleanings out of it depending on the size of the filter. The red dye in the spray oil lets you know you have the filter oiled properly [when spotless clean the filter is white] I strongly recommend the kit. K&N says to clean it every 50,000 miles or something silly like that, most of my customers have me clean thiers when it looks nasty usually around 15,000-20,000 miles depending on where you drive
