Just a simple letter stating the following will do.

Dear Sir/Madame

Thank you for your letter dated (..../..../.....)

Please could you keep my details on file & contact me should anything suitable come up in the future.

Thank you for time & I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Yours Sincerely.

Just right them a letter saying that you would be very happy for them to keep your details on file and for them to contact you as soon as they have something they feel you would be suitable for

I have had loads of similiar letters and have NEVER heard back from any of them, even when they have advertised the same (or similiar) job in the press.

Just ignore it and put it in the bin

You can't do anything. If tyhe comapny has no vacancies you can't force them to do anything else. They have been honest and up front so look elsewhere for a job.

Im afraid this is normal practice.
