Because they are everywhere you look! In every city, town and village and all the roads in between are endless parades of cars. It really can't be good for the environment. More people should use bikes, public transport or walk places for the good of the planet. It's environment verses convenience.

Too many! Britain looks more like a car park than a country. Most towns and cities are ugly and inhuman. Shopping takes place in godawful sheds out in the suburbs surrounded by acres of ugly parking space simply because it's easy for motorists. Motorways and arterial roads rape the countryside. Anyone without a car is sneered at as a social outcast. People can only go anywhere or do anything if they can do it by car.....Cars are drugs and most people are junkies. And how much is spent merely on transport for God's sake! It's insane.

cars are toys, granted, but they're very nice toys - even I have one.

Public transport sucks - I live in a smallish, but not insignificant town about 10 miles west of Oxford (yeah, where they used to make the blankets).

It takes me about an hour if I want to be environmentally friendly and ride the train into London, but takes me twice as long just to get to the train station in the first place.

Soddit, I'll just drive and be politically incorrect.
