The price can range greatly depending on your location and the specifics of your project. In my part of North Carolina a service change to 200 amps will run $1200 if no complications up to $2500 if major changes were made.

Yes; It is expensive but, while your sleeping, with your family and your home is cruising on it's electrical heartbeat and everything is continuing to run smooth because the electrical wiring has been correctly installed, who are you going to thank and the money spent, to protect your family, and keep you safe? wasn't it worth it?
It's going to run anywhere from 3 to 5 thousand dollars. A exact price cannot be given here due to not knowing what you want. Get three or four quotes, get a contract, call some of the previous customers. Call the electrical board in your city and check the licenses. Good luck

I recently got an estimate to upgrade from 100 to 200 amps and have the majority of the house rewired (2bdrm, 1bath, full basement and attic - don't remember sq footage) ... it was going to be close to $3500-$4000. Most of that is labor, the materials aren't that expensive.

We recently had a new panel put in and it was about $1600. This is near Washington DC, where prices are typically higher than the rest of the country. Depending on the age of your home, you may need additional circuits run for the bathrooms/kitchen, which are about $500 each.
It's worth it.
