The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was started in the 1950's during the Cold War period. Both, the USA and USSR were trying to polarise the world as either capitalist democracies (USA) or socialist communists (USSR). There were fears of World War III when many countries came together to form NAM, which was a forum that aligned neither with the US nor with USSR and maintained an independent ideology.
However with the Cold War coming to an end and USSR dis-integrating, NAM has lost much of its relevance.

The Last NAM meeting was held in 2006, this year in Brazil, after many years, though most international analysts are sceptic of its significance despite the high voltage publicity.
