The Statue of Liberty is your Radio Trivia Answer

Bartholdi's statue gives only one explicit reference to the history of the United States: the date - July 4, 1776 - in Roman numerals on the tablet she holds in her left hand. Perhaps this was because the Statue of Liberty did not originate with the plan for New York, but with a proposal Bartholdi made in the 1860's to the Khedive of Egypt, that he should build a huge lighthouse at the mouth of the Suez Canal. The maquettes of this project, ''Egypt Bringing Light to Asia,'' were directly inspired by the ancient Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
