It was never actually banned, people just stopped watching it because it became out of fashion, as it was mainly performed in the late 19th to early 20th century (1860s-1920s).

Many people today still do the can-can, but not actually as an act as itself or in public wearing the dresses that many women used to, as it was seen as a bit revealing, and now today would be extremely revealing (as the underwear and full leg are shown) and is completely out of date. Mainly men attended the shows, because as I said earlier, the underwear and full leg are shown.

Apparently, also there were many injuries if the can-can had not been properly mastered. As everyone was holding each other around the shoulders, there was not a very large area between each person, and each time the leg was kicked upwards, it was on a diagonal, which shielded the other persons face. However, if a shoe was lost, or a step misguided, a person may have been kicked in the face, and as it was a fast paced dance, you can imagine how painful it would have been and how hard the shoe must have hit you travelling at around 100 miles an hour!

Hope I helped!

The can can was a fast paced extravagant dance which killed and injured quite a number of people. you dance very close together and flung your high healed feet in the air, It was stopped (never banned) due to there being to many fatalities, if you have seen the recent Moulin Rouge film which features the can can you will understand !

It was popular at the end of the 1800s` and the beginning of the 1900s`It was considered to be very obscene by many people at the time.Mainly men went to watch the shows, but it very soon became sort of out-dated and old fashioned, especially as new dances and forms of entertainment took its` place.

I don't think the can-can has ever been banned although I have heard that it was performed without underwear at one time and that is now frowned on,(banned)

I suppose at the time it was regarded as very erotic, seeing a ladies knickers and all, at that time of day a woman wore them long bloomer type things so actually being able to see the tops of the legs would have been very immoral.it must have drove the men wild , the poor things would have heart attack today.

I was a teenager during the "can can" years. I didn't like them because you couldn't get close to your girl.

The "can can" was a large slip with a hoop in the bottom of it to make it stand out all around the girl wearing it. It went out of fashion and fell by the way side.

Now, evidently, according to the answers, the "can can" means something else to the younger generation. Would one of you please enlighten me on this?

Good luck. Pops

It was banned because Tulous Lutrec, a well known Can Can Con Artist, kept shoving his head up their skirts.......Allegedly.
