It had only 1 stamp and was 1oz and correct spelling and such as I mailed stuff to that person before. I also spelled out the state instead of useing abbreviations.

An oversized envelope may require additional postage
when it's over a number 10 envelope size

and in the USA - we only need a two letter state designation and zip code

If you live in the US and you are sending this to another address in the US then a large size envelope weighing 1 oz will not be less than $0.52. Since they do not make 52 cent stamps, then I would assume you did not put enough postage on the envelope. Spelling out the full name of the state would not get your letter returned. If anything, it may take an extra day for it to arrive somewhere.

Other rules apply to large envelopes:

The above answers are incorrect in different ways.
Look at the front of it closely, it should have a red or black stamp saying return to sender.....attempted not known; postage due; e.t.c or if not at the bottom of the envelope on the front or back, you will see a bar code printed onto the envelope or on to a whit strip of paper that is stuck to the envelope. The Numbers to the end of the bar code should be the zip code of the addressee. If it is take it to the post office and they will resend it for free(or ask to see the Post Master for additional questions), if it is a different zip code, take it to the post office, make sure they cover the wrong zip code before they re-send it and then let it be sent. The zip code is the key not the state.

You may use the full state spelled out. Your problem is not enough postage to send envelope. I recently sent a similar sized envelope. I took it to the post office so they could weigh and put the proper postage on it. It cost 63 cents. So if you want to avoid going to the post office, put two stamps on it to cover the postage sufficiently.

because it have your address on it. You supose to write the address of the person you want to send in the front of the envelope and if want your address at the back..not the other way around.
