It's not clear, but some biologists think this is an example of 'sexual selection'. This is an aspect of evolution that's quite separate from natural selection (ie survival of the fittest).

The principle of sexual selection is that one sex (usually females) starts preferring certain specific characteristics in the other, and those males with more of that characteristic breed more and have more descendants who themselves have that characteristic.

The main example of sexual selection usually given is the massive tail of the peacock, but extra body hair in men could be another - females started preferring males with more hair, perhaps because it indicated higher testosterone levels and therefore increased virility.

It's all highly speculative but is fairly plausible.

thats not really true, women just get rid of theirs. some men have little, some women naturally have loads. Dark haired people tend to be hairier for example a dark haired woman is likely to be hairier than a blond man, though it can be vica versa. I don't think its to do with men being workers cos if anything if you sit about all day you're gonna need keeping warm rather than grafting working up a sweat!

I don't think mother nature gave men more body hair, I think evolution has reduced the body hair on women more because of the chemical balances. Thats to say, at one stage of our evolution men and women were equally hairy, in almost all areas apart from the chest. (See apes for a point of view).

Because women have more fat stored under the skin than men do. Women do not need hairs to trap air to maintain the body temperature at 37.8 degree Celsius as they the fat stored under the skin helps it. Therefore men need hairs to achieve that.

But now with improvements in technology you can you have them permanently removed! If that's what you like!
