Is it because only polyatomic ions and binary molecular binary compounds use di?

If you said Barium dihydride, chemists would know what you were talking about. There is only one real compound with barium and hydrogen, BaH2, so its pointless to say barium dihydride when there is only one type of hydride for barium.

The rule for chemistry naming is that you are only as specific as you absolutely have to be to describe the compound. Most non-metals can react in different proportions, so you need to be specific (CO2 and CO are not the same thing).

Since Ba has two valencies , it is but obvious that Ba with hydrogen gives BaH2.
also since Ba does not react with hydrogen in any other ratio and so the only compound is BaH2.

hydrogen is a diatomic molecule so in naming it should you be given H2, despite it supposed to be called dihydride as per the rules of covalent naming, it'll remian as hydrogen...
