As many people above answered, Akihito is his "first name."
But Japanese people never call him Akihito.
He is called the Heisei Emperor (strictly speaking, the Heisei Tenno in Japanese ). Heisei is the name of his reign (the year 2006 is the 18th year of Heisei).

Calling the Emperor by his first name is never accepted in Japan.
Calling him by his throne name (or the name of his reign), the Japanese show their respect to the Emperor as well as their own nation and history.
