Midwest Buddhist Temple is a great place to meet people..also, there is a huge Asian market in Arlington Heights called Mitsuwa...

Chicago is a very friendly city with a huge asian population. You should have no problem meeting people...(there is also a multicultral center off of North Avenue..I suggest joining a womans group, reading club, or anything that would interest you.)

Don't be afraid. People are nice and you'll find all different kind of ethnic groups all over the city. That's what makes America great. It's a melting pot of all nationalities.

Although from a bunch of cities I've been, Montreal, Canada has the most diverse nationalities all over that city. More so, I think then New York City, but who knows? I do remember seeing lots of Asians in Montreal. So if you haven't moved yet, think about Montreal too. It'll be a heck of a lot cheaper to live there too.

Wish you the best wherever you land. You'll have fun no matter where you go. Cities are great places to live.

Chicago has a large asian community and two main Asian neighborhoods, Chinatown on Cermak Road near 22nd Street on the near South Side, and the Argyle street area on North Broadway. Both have large groups of Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, etc., in addition to Indian, Pakistani, etc. If you're worried about not fitting in, don't be. Now, you don't have to live in the same neighborhood as everyone else who is Asian. Anywhere you live you'll be pretty much accepted. True there may be some people who don't like you, but that happens everywhere in the U.S. But it seems that most Asian who arrive here (as well a most Poles, most African, most Croats, etc.) seem to prefer living in neighborhoods with people from their "homeland". Nothing wrong with that. I guess it's because they feel comfortable around them and can express themselves in a familiar way. You should visit the city first, go to the two Asian neighborhoods and see what it's like.

One thing you will notice about Chicago is its ethnic diversity and the different neighborhoods, organizations, and activities which support them.

Within the Asian community you'll find Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino, Indian, and so forth. Some have entire communities with businesses and organizations set up. There are a couple of TV stations devoted to ethnic programming, even two low powered ones primarily catering to the Korean community.

I was born and raised in Chicago to Philippine immigrants, and I've observed how those who've immigrated in recent years find the transition to American life eased by knowing they can go to a Filipino grocery store to find native food or to run into people who speak their dialect, or to worship in their native tongue. My wife felt that her move from the Philippines to Chicago was much less traumatic than the one to Boston because of that community support.

You never know, you just might run into someone you didn't think lives in Chicago. Good luck and best wishes.
