"How much (money)?" But, with "ma", it could mean: "How much?!" as when one is shocked and asking again (in a double take).
"Please pay the bill in advance," or "Please take care of the bill first."
Chinese can have so many meanings; there are only about 3000 characters used in normal speech, most of which have a wide range of figurative meanings, each usually is based on a few concrete meanings. What with all that word manipulation, it could be the reason Chinese people tend to me so good at math. But I could be talking out me a ss....
