Like any small business, word of mouth works wonders. However, your major consideration is your local catchment area. Ideally, you will need a large town/city to support a viable tuition business. Also, have the learners come to you, rather than you travelling to them. In this manner you will be able to see small groups, rather than individuals.
Advertising is the key. Newspapers are fine, but be consistant. Marketing is probably the most costly business expence, but if handled corectly will produce result.
Also, look at leaflet drops. Business card style, dropped through letterboxes will encourage people to keep advert until needed, wheras a flimsy A6 might be thrown away.
Get in contact with other tutors in order to expand your subject base, while you offer premesis, resources and take more time to co-ordinate, as well as teach. These tutors will be paid a session fee, so you will need to ensure that you get enough students to cover this.
Finally, get a good accountant.
