in order to find the value of 2 variables, you need two equations or at lease what one of the letters represent, but another way to solve for them is to substitute zero for each unknown and solve that way...

5x - 28 = 12 + 3y
add 28 to both sides

5x = 40 + 3y
subtract 3y

5x - 3y = 40

when x = 0

5(0) - 3y = 40
divide by (-3)

y = -40/3

when y = 0

5x - 3(0) = 40
divide by (5)

x = 8

5x-28=12+3y
hence, 5x-3y=40
Linear eqs in 2 variables have many solutions
If x =0, y=-40/3
If x =1, y=-35/3
(take any value of x and find the corresponding value of y)

5x-28 = 12+3y
5x = 3y+40
x = 3y+40/5
x = 3/5y + 8
0 = 3/5y + 8
-8 = 3/5y
y = -30

x=0, y= -30
