The Brian Jacques Redwall Series the books have got everything (love, action, adventure, comedy) top marks although you have to give the books a chance at times. The end of the books always leave you thinking. Hope you become a Redwall Fan! (Read these first) go to the site www.redwall.org for infomation about the series.
"The Series of unfortunate Events" also has top marks but sometimes it is a bit too sad. The Author is Lemony Snicket.
Another good series is The Alex rider series buy Anthony Horrowitz.
The Hatchet series are good they are about a young boy named Brian who is trying to survive in the wilderness of Canada.
In comics, the best are Garfield, Asterix and Tintin. Filled with humor and action. The best comics!
If youre more in to spiritual things read the life of Prince Siddhartha.
Sathya Sai Speaks volumes 1 and 2,
And "autobiography of a Yogi (paramahansa Yaganandha)".

OK, so I am just answering this as I was a bit shocked by the amount of people saying the Bible.
So here's my suggestions, great books but not necessarily the best in the world, just ones I've really, really enjoyed and what else are books here for!
Lost and found by Oliver Jeffers
Across the nightingale Floor Lian Hearn
To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee
Gathering Light Jennifer Donnelly
Grimm Fairy tales
So, for me they could change but they are all great, great books.

A comedy book - to lengthen your life. Happiness makes people live longer.
A romance book - so that you would know or remember how to have loved.
A history book - so you would know what happened to the world you live in.
A book of knowledge- to get you informed.
And last & most important, the Bible, to prepare your entry to heaven.
