This is the wing-back system operated by Hoddle in the past and MacLaren recently. Also played by Brazil in the past.

The system is so bad that it only works if you are a Division ahead of your opponents!

The 3-5-2 formation actually weakens the defense ,making the team more vulnerable. But the 5-3-2 weakens the midfield section. This also leads to weak play because 3 midfielders cannot rely on each other properly and it becomes difficult to separate defensive/attacking midfielders.

it's a great system if you have lots of good midfielders, and don't mind playing a lot of 1-0 and extra time games. for my money a 4-4-2 can give you the best of offense and defense, and when you get the ball going back and forth it's so much fun to watch, but a 3-5-2 is great at holding a lead

My personal view is that all these tactical formations are designed to stop the opposition scoring which is the antithesis of what the supporters want. Seems the Managers are too scared to lose a goal, then the game and ultimately their job. If you look at football from the 60's/70's the game was far more open apart from the Italians and better to watch. Time they dreamed up formations that enabled the scoring of goals instead of worrying about losing one.

Playing the 3-5-2 formation is good if for example your team has an abundance of good midfielders and you opponent is week in that area so in theory you can control the games tempo.
5-3-2 is quite defencive but with fifteen minuets to go and one Nil up its perfect for a counter attack as it encourages your opponents to attack leaving a space on the wing and a big hole in front of their keeper unless playing with a sweeper.

There are teams that prove they can get results with the most obscure formations.
As long as a team is playing decent football, why should it matter what formation they employ?

Yes basically. a 3-4-3 for attack or 4-4-2 seem much better.

Sorry, but I think professional football (soccer) is a plain stupid game altogether. Played by millionaire "handbags" and payed for by people with no life, no future and never likely to have either!
