Use Harpic, in the royal blue plastic bottle with a red cap. It is fantastic stuff! If you have really bad stains you should(as a couple of other answers have said) remove most of the water from the bowl, Then get a plastic dish and an old tooth brush and mix some flour and some of the liquid blue Harpic to a fairly thick paste.Spread this over the worst stains and leave over night. The flour makes the cleaner bond to the bowl and stay in the spot where you want it. Next day, brush it away. Hey Presto!

Sounds like you have a build up of limescale. Get Harpic limescale remover (its in a bottle a bit like toilet duck) Squirt this round your toilet bowl (works even better if you can remove the water from the bowl first but will still work even if you dont) and leave overnight, or on during the day when you're out and not needing to use your toilet. Then give it a good scrub with the toilet brush and hey presto, no more nasty stains!

try harpic... lime scale remover....... bleach will just bleach it it it won't remove it.... lime scale remove removes!
if there below the water mark then take the top off the toilet and hold the ballcock....... so as not to allow the toilet to refill, ...... then put harpic down there and give it a brush....... let go of the ballcock and allow to refill.... and flush a few times as harpic is hydrochloric acid
NOTE + DO NOT USE ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN TOILET BOWLS

A cheap way is to use a mixture of vinegar and dish soap. Excellent for most cleaning. However, scrubbing bubbles is an excellent product that is so easy to use and does a great job. Liquid bleach is another way but be careful using it.

You have to do some scrubbing with a brush also. If you have or if that doesn't work, try CLR. Available at most stores. That and a brush should do it. It might be hard water, rust stains and this should work. If not, time to replace the toliet.

Do not use pumice stone as it will take the earthenware glze off and cause worse stains in future. Use caustic soda and leave overnight. It will come up as clean as a new pin.

Try using a pumice stone, just rub hard and it should get rid of the stain. Won't scratch the bowl either.

I found a good spray called 'limelite' - its in a green bottle - removes the thickest of limescale so should work for your loo too!! The big supermarkets stock it. Good luck!
