If you live in Portland, Oregon, you can actually have a sleepover party inside the submarine at OMSI.

Or, if you live here, you could contact the forest service and request the use of one of the fire lookouts on Mt. Hood. They rent them out for cheap to the public during the winter months. It's a mile hike through the forest, and a big climb up a long ladder, but once inside the lookout station, there is heat, a place to cook, and a beautiful place to observe wildlife and tell ghost stories (the book, Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark is a good one...) without the usual winter camping hassles.

Otherwise, you could do a treasure hunt, either inside your own home or out in the local neighborhood. Break the boys into teams of two so that they can win a prize if they are the first to find the treasure. However, so the kids keep their interest, make sure everyone gets to pick a prize: just let the people who find the treasure first, get first pick of the prizes and so on...

You could have the boys make candy for the party. There is a cookbook based on Ronald Dahl (the author of the BFG and James and The Giant Peach) with slimy- oozy nasty looking boy treats that are good to eat and fun to get dirty making. The recipe book is called Ronald Dhal's Revolting Recipes.

If you are really stumped, go buy the book, The Big Book of Boy Stuff by Bart King. I thought this would be a hokey book, but I was surprised when my godson asked for it for his birthday and all the boys at his party were very impressed. There's lots of boy stuff you can incorporate into a party in that book.

I have more ideas, that if I knew more about the interests of the children involved and the city you live in, I could come up with something more specific.

Hope this helps.

Well I am sort of in the same situation, trying to find a place that is not too expensive and needing something for just a few kids. Certainly not at the house for my son's 12th birthday party that will be combined with my roommate's son who is turning 8 too. My son's birthday party will be the weekend of 12/2 & 12/3.

Depending on how many kids there will be and how much you want to spend the following is what I have thought of or found so far around the Milwaukie/Portland Oregon area:

Ultrazone Lazertag in Milwaukie
Bullwinkles in Wilsonville
Safari Sams in Sherwood
North Clackamas Aquatic Park
Mt Scott Pool
Oregon City Pool
Oaks Park roller skating
Bowling
Childrens Museum
Movie Party at one of the movie theaters (Century has something)

Good luck in your search and I am hoping that someone can help me out on this one. Thanks.

I don't know where you live ,but I have had a few of my kids birthday parties at a roller skating rink..It's nice that way you can invite the family and all their school friends without everyone being in your home! No mess to clean up..That is what you pay the rink to do..Also if you live around an Ice Hockey rink that would be great! Most places rent for private parties..I just hope your little one knows how to skate!

My son's 10th bday party is this weekend. We're having his party at the local ice rink. Beginning at noon, 45 mins in the special room w/cake & ice cream and hot cocoa then out to skate until 5pm.

We've done lazer tag (last year).

Pool party at the YMCA.

Go Kart at the ring.

Miniature golf.

Anywhere that's NOT my house is good by me!
