i always wondered if j5 played the instruments in the songs in which they were recording. why would berry gordy let beginners play on their records when he had a professional band(the funk brothers) behind him that could do it all. has that ever struck anybody as odd.

Nope. The J5 did have others playing back up for them on their records as well as in concert. (Saw them perform live when I was 7) I think the only time they played instruments themselves was when they first started out and didn't have a contract.

I think they did. Joe was beating enough and he probably made sure they knew how to play. Practice hard enough and you won't be a beginner for long. Maybe they were that talented.

I don't recall them playing instruments at all. On stage or in recordings. They just sang and danced.
