I want to buy a guitar to start taking lessons with. Since I'm new at it, I don't want to pay too much, but I don't want to buy a complete piece of crap either. Help!

Acoustic is what i'm likely leaning towards if that helps.

<>Are you near a Walmart? They sell a $70 basic starter guitar with DVD there. Not bad looking.

Since you didn't specify acoustic or electric, or what type of music you're interested in, it's hard to direct you. I think your best bet would be to go to a guitar shop, tell them you're buying an instrument to take lessons on, and ask for their suggestions. Give them an idea of what you're willing to spend and they can show you what they have that will work best for you.

There are plenty of low-end guitars that are not crap these days, and new brands are appearing all the time, but I would not purchase a guitar at Walmart or anything lke it. Buy from a musical instrument dealer. If you should run into a problem with the guitar, they can handle it for you right there.

Good luck!

I would second going to a good guitar shop. The guys there will be experts and can help find the right guitar for you. If you have problems they can help you out. I have found that an ongoing relationship with a good shop is well worth having. Just try asking for help with a tricky chord change in Walmart!

Go with the Ibanez start up kit. It comes with an amp, tuner and DVD lessons. I'm getting the some one for Christmas. It's reasonably priced and a good beginner guitar.
