I agree 100% with everyone who said "anything by Tamora Pierce." I've found many of her books at my local library.

Philip Pullman is also a great author for teens. His best series starts out with The Golden Compass, but his Sally Lockhart series is probably more meant for teens. I think most libraries will have at least some of his books. Go for the series books, some of the one-offs are kind of strange.

You also might enjoy Jean Auel's series that begins with Clan of the Cave Bear, which should be at the library too. (The later books in the series can get pretty racy, just FYI.)

If you like mysteries and enjoy a sort of victorian era setting, try Dorothy Sayers (start with Gaudy Night) or Elizabeth Peters (start with any of the Amelia Peabody books that are set in Egypt; the later ones are my favorites). Again, libraries rock.

I, like someone before me, like mostly fantasy books but a good mystery is "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie. It can also be found in some older copies under the name of "Ten Little ******* Boys" (was changed to be politically correct). It's a good murder mystery, really keeps you guessing who the murderer is and isn't too gory, I read it when I was 15 (I'm 17 now but yeah I still like it).

Like I said, most of my favourites are fantasy...

"Twilight" by Stephenie Meyers (Best book ever! A definate MUST READ!!)

"Walk in my shoes" by Alwyn Evans (the story of a young girl seeking asylum in Australia after fleeing Afghanistan, war and terror.)

Umm... I'm not what else. If you would like my BIG list of must read fantasy books, feel free to email me but I'm not sure if you are a big fantasy reader.

I hope this helps. Your school or local library should have Agatha Christie books (though a few of her novels I didn't enjoy so much because they are quite old...) and the others hopefully will be there too. I'm not sure if "Walk in my Shoes" would be in a local library if you don't live in Australia because it is written by an Australian author... : S

Everything by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Charles Dickens.

If you like mysteries, definitely check out the Philip Marlowe books by Raymond Chandler, as well as Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently books. They are completely different, but both are very good.

Tamora Pierce is pretty fun. I'd also recommend China Miéville's books.

If you want to read books for free, your best bet is to go to your local library or check out Project Gutenberg.

When I was 15 I read lots of Judy Blume books. Might be a bit old fashioned now but "Are you There God, It's Me Margaret" is a great story about an American girl growing up, meeting boys, making new friends and experiencing becoming an adult. Funny and touching too. She wrote loads of others as well - give it a try, they're really good.

i just finished reading a book called "justin thyme' which is my fave this year so far. the main charecters sister is about 14 or 15 and she was my fave charecter. its a mystery whodunnit sort of story and had me guessing right to the end.

'holes' is also a fab book, but all the charecters in it are boys but its still good

as for reading books for free - you can get any book from your local library. even if they dont have it in they can order it for you so ask for whatever you want. also you could try amazon marketplace - check out your chosen book on amazon then click buy used/new at the side. you can get amazing bargians this way. books that have very slight damage to the cover and are rduced a lot in price sometime for as little as 1p plus postage

What about "Jain Eyre" by Charlotta Bronte or "Consuelo" by George Sand? They tell about very kind and gentle women yet very brave and set very good examples for young girl. "Jayne Eyre" comes to 10 great books which changed the world. It is definitely influenced the role of woman in modern world. Get that book and enjoy.
