Then enact legislation banning smoking damn near everywhere, when this legislation not only hurts small businesses like bars, but the tobacco industry itself, which whether you like it or not, employs many people.

What good is having had a job when you die of cancer?

Whatever makes you think that smoking bans hurt small business? In Ireland the pub owners griped like mad about the prospective smoking ban -- but once it was in place their business increased!

That might not happen in bars in America -- I haven't seen statistics or reports; but it seems to be happening in upscale restaurants in France and the USA.

The tobacco industry does not have anyone's sympathy. As far as I know, it's not lost significant sales domestic or foreign -- or if it has the latter has compensated for the former. And it's among the most highly mechanized industries anywhere. And the smoking ban is a long time coming and has been discounted in the market place and in the employment plans of most kids. I hope.

I knew a tobacco farmer who despised his crop, but depended upon his quota in Georgia. Until he died. Of lung cancer.

The loss of jobs is due to globalization. The jobs went not to Mexico as Ross Perot predicted, but to China. The effects were compounded in the past 6 years by tax laws favoring the very rich and hurting the middle classes. What people complain about is that they can't raise families on the wages on offer for the jobs left: minimum wage (a minimum unchanged in ten years) jobs that are of interest only to illegal aliens who live an austere lifestyle crowded together in barren apartments so they can support families at home. Their jobs on the farms in Mexico were destroyed by NAFTA and American crop subsidies -- US crops are dumped in Mexico and Africa. (The African cotton farmers head to Europe. Or starve.)

So: don't take these issues out of context. Smoking has little or nothing to do with your premise about jobs.

Great question and I get your reasoning.More people are moving to states where you dont get treated like an animal because you smoke.More people are leaving their jobs with the smoking bans to find one they can smoke. The liberals are getting into policing our private lives more and more. They had the smoking police, now they have the religion police and the food police and the fat people police. And I was stupid for many years thinking the republicans wanted more govt..I obviously was wrong.

Omaha,Ne now illegal to smoke in public walking down the street or in your own car,you will actually get arrested and people were encouraged to call 911 to report smokers and the police are livid over this.

Dekalb County,Ga also illegal to smoke in public, however you just get a ticket there.

California,if a truck driver pulls into a D.O.T. scale smoking, they get a ticket for smoking in their workplace. When they are driving the truck that is considered working therefore making it their work place.

Yet the liberals are all for abortion because its a womans body yet its our bodies if we choose to smoke but thats a different story.

Because left wing commies hate America and want to see it go down hill. There are plenty of jobs right now, but they are trying to ruin that. I'm a non-smoker, but I agree that "Big Tobacco" companies really do help our economy.

There are a lot of jobs, just too many unqualified people, or at the other end of the spectrum jobs that people feel are beneath them.

I think because of the health concerns. People shouldn't gripe about there not being in any jobs, only jobs that they don't want to do.

maybe its because a big percentage of our jobs are being sent to india, mexico, or china. the repubs consider that when a persons unemployment benefits run out, they are no longer unemployed.
