You probably have de Quervain's tenovaginitis. You can get relief from a steroid injection. Ask your doctor about it.

This isn't an easy question to answer. It's certainly possible that you sprained it without knowing, & I don't think putting it in a splint is a good idea. I've no idea how old you are (although arthritis can occur at an early age) but seems unlikely since it's only in one hand. The fact that it's usually when you "wake up" is curious--an indication of something, because you aren't "using" it in your sleep, (are you?!) Over a month is a long time. You should see a doctor. If it is a sprain, & sounds like it to me, you need to know how best to treat it so it will heal. I had a tiny fracture in my little toe almost three years ago; I had it x-rayed, but my doctor (no longer my doctor) gave me no advice & I'll have TWO crippled toes forever. So don't mess with it, please?

Could be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

In the human wrist there is a sheath of tough connective tissue which envelopes and protects one nerve (median nerve) and tendons, which attach muscles to the wrist and hand bones. The carpal tunnel is the space between this sheath (above) and the bones (below) making up the wrist and hand (carpal bones). The term 'carpal tunnel' is also used quite commonly to refer to 'carpal tunnel syndrome' which is a condition where the median nerve is pinched within the tunnel and causes pain and/or numbness of the wrist/hand, once thought to be a result of repetitive motion such as painting or typing.

You need to see your doctor. It could be a repetitive strain injury caused by doing a lot of typing, or a repeated hand movement in your job. See here: http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23068814/
