Depends on the degree of swelling. Some fluid retention is usual in pregnancy, and by itself is to be monitored. However, fluid retention, elevated blood pressure and protein in the urine together spell pre-eclampsia (previously known as toxemia).
Pre-eclampsia is a condition dangerous to both mother and baby and if untreated can result in eclamptic fits which can result in the death of both both and child - that is the worst case scenario, of course.
Carefully monitored and treated, it is rare to cause a problem these days.
Treatment is usually STRICT bed rest, often the mother will be hospitalised to ensure the rest happens.
The delivery is often enduced a few weeks before the due date.
The obstetrician will monitor the mother carefully. See your obstetrician.

I just saw the doctor for my 22 week check up. He noticed some swelling in my legs and was some what concerned. I was working 12 hour shifts and he cut me back to 8 hour shifts. He also recommended propping my feet up as much as possible and cutting back on my salt intake. Also, watch your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is elevated and you have swelling then this is significant and your doctor needs to know about it.

Be careful. Some at the end is normal but I had it and it quickly went from normal to Toxemia then eclampsia then HELLP(Hemolytic elevated liver enzymes low platelet). My baby was delivered emergency c-section at 32 weeks. He is fine now but spent 33 days in the NICU. My blood pressure went sky high. So don't worry, just be smart and make sure your doctor or midwife is aware and says it is normal.
