CARgo goes by plane, SHIPment goes by truck. You have a PAIR of panties, but just ONE bra.

Someone tell me the reasoning for this misuse of words.

CARGO can go by car, truck, ship, elephant's back, whathaveyou. Likewise SHIPMENT can go by ship, plane, car, barge, etc. You stumped me on pair of panties.

Just as....
Noses RUN but feet SMELL
PARK on driveways & DRIVE on parkways
SLIM chance & FAT chance are the same
Wise MAN & wise GUY are opposites.
When a house BURNS UP, it BURNS DOWN.
You FILL IN the form by FILLING IT OUT.
Alarm clocks go OFF when the alarm goes ON.
When stars are out they are VISIBLE, when lights are out they are INVISIBLE.
RECITE at a play, PLAY at a recital.
If 1 goose, 2 geese, then 1 moose, 2 MEESE? Plural of choose is CHEESE?

AND the list goes on....

This is the beauty of the English language. It's been cobbled together from so many different sources, changed and evolved over time until it is what it is today. It will always keep you guessing :)
