The government was put in place to protect the people. Do you want rapists and murderers near you?

It doesn't benefit the government to put all people in jail but when someone breaks the laws we have set they must deal with the consequences. If you don't like the laws then you can vote to change them.

Yes, it keeps dangerous people from committing crimes that would endanger society. The US is a democracy, so it benefits the government to keep society (the people) safe and happy. Of course, there are plenty of people in jail that aren't dangerous, but that's another questions entirely.

I doubt it benifit's the goverment but if the law is broken someone has to do something. If a drunken driver run over your child or someone you care about...they dang well better put them in jail.
