I'm in the market for some used rims for a small body truck I just recently aquired. Aside from the obvious bend, what sort of defects, if any, should I be on the look-out for from private sellers?

Hey there if your buying used rims and theres no rubber on them its pretty simple to look at them to see if there in good shape with no pits in them and look close to see if theres any cracks in them and a good way to see if a rim is bent only if theres no rubber on it just roll it on a cement floor or a flat surface and if theres a bent rim you will see it because it won't roll smooth it will have a little bump to it rolling on the floor and thats about it but if the rims have rubber on them ask the seller if its ok to take the rims in and have them checked on a balance machine and if the seller says no even if you ask him to come with you don't buy the rims something is wrong with them i hope this info was help full for you

Use rims can be a real buy or a real pain.
Look for cracks, blue or brown spots and course the bent rim.
To really see how good a rim is mount it on a wheel balance mechanine with out the tire and spin it. If it out of true you will see it.

look for "wear and tear" around the hub area and lug nut area, if there is no visual damage you could look in this area, the lug nut holes may be oval ed or beat; look for rust spots, but beware, there are some ford rims out there that tend to start leaking air through the weld that holds them together

ask the seller if you can bring them to get ballanced. i dont know how much money you are talking...if they are $100 a set or $4k a set. if i were spending alot, i would make sure they were exactly what i was wanting. tell the guys at the shop whats up...otherwise they will just ballance them and that wont tell you if they are bent.
