Hello, I have another pc wich had Windows XP home edition on it installed from factory until the hard drive went bad. I replaced hard drive but now it has no format(no back up disk were made), I only want to use it to play simple games on for kids. I want to know if there's a place to download a start up disk for maybe Windows 95 or 98 to install on it or if I can make back up disk off of my pc wich as XP home (the one I'm using now) and use to put XP on the other (I know they can only be used once but wanted to know if they can be used on another pc.) I'd like to get this other pc running again but just didn't want to sink any more money into it. Any help would be apprieciated. Thanks

The computer that has/had WIN XP HOME, purchase and install WIN XP pro (www.directron.com). You need a copy of Win XP pro and the registration number.

Install on the computer and then connect to Internet.

Go to www.microsoft.com Update and let that site update your system.

Issues to watch out for.

If the system has 512 MB RAM you should purchase another 512 MB.
If the system has an older graphic card you might have to purchase a newer one with at lest 126MB ram, better is one that has 256MB ram ON THE GRAPHIC CARD.

When you turn on a computer many programs run to support
your computer and the application/s that you chose to run.

It is just like a car, you started it to go some place, but the gages for gas, temp, oil, generator all run and the all require some sort of energy .i.e current or gas.

So it is with your computer, that is why you always need the most memory (RAM) that you can buy and your mother board has slots for.

If your game run fine with Win XP OK, if not add RAM and a newer graphic card, nvida 7800 series should do.

Win xp is not DOS based so you can't make startup disk. But there are options for receovery cd etc. But your problem seems different.

All you need a CD containing the operating system(say win xp). Just insert the cd, it should auto run. Every OS installation CD has formating built in and it will ask you if the drive is not preformatted.

You can't get a legitimate copy of Windows (any version) for free. If you go to the person who gave it to you, perhaps they have the original setup disk.

Otherwise, you might consider Linux, which is free to download from many places. You can also get it at some stores fairly inexpensively. It will come with games, web browser, office programs, etc. It's a truly robust OS, and much easier to install than it used to be.

If you have a windows installation cd, you can use it to install windows on your computer as many times as you want, not just once.

try to reinstall windows, if not, go back to the computer place where you've bought the hard drive, and complain about how the their product messed up your pc, they will get sacred trust me, they might install it for you and fix it for free..done that before..and worked :)

good luck
